Amy Curran

My Course is in Art and Design, specialising in textile design whilst focusing on ‘Small Arts Business set up’. This project was based around my life in lockdown and how I could continue my practice from home instead of the studio. My submission for this module was a collection of nine hand printed satin shirts. The subject matter that I chose for my final work was split into three collections, all with inspiration from my life during lockdown. The Systematic and theoretical analysis of the methods that I have applied to my body of practice has allowed me to produce new work through new processes such as heat pressing and sublimation fabric ink printing, all from home. During lockdown I had many opportunities offered to me with commissioned work, allowing conversations with individuals and companies in marketing such as ‘Swizzels’, greatly encouraging my body of work.
I have approached this project as a small arts business owner who is developing their ideas and products for the set up of their brand in a fashion and art market. I want to continue exploring current topics in my work, in a subtle and visually appealing way whilst continuing to produce collections of visually bold and iconic designs.

OFFLINE GOING ONLINE

During my stay in New Delhi, I came across how people in India are coping with the pandemic. What interested me the most was the queuing system. There was a box drawn in front of the shop, keeping a distance of 1 m and people had to stand on that box and wait for there turn to buy daily essential products.

Concept

Big companies like Amazon, Nykaa, Flipkart, Zomato, etc. have already made their position in the market as an e-commerce brands in India.

But what about the small-scale retail & medical shops? As observed people are still putting their lives at risk and going to these local grocery stores and medical stores. They have to stand in queues for hours to wait for their turn and maintain social distance. There is a trust been built between the customers and these small retails? My concept will motivate these small retail shops to come online and sell their products through this app.

Through my application you can search the nearby grocery & medical store which you are already aware of, place your order and select the time which is suitable to you and a delivery person will be sent to these shops and will safely deliver your order.

With the help of this app small retails can increase their sales and maintain social distancing.

With the help of this application, people can easily order essential products from small retailers while sitting at home safe. And also these retailers can sell there products having minimum workers to support social distancing.

Unique Features

Once you open the app you will have a walkthrough in which you can see the precautions taken by us, to ensure your safety, i.e. Order Placement with minimum clicks, Zero contact between the delivery agent and the retailer, Contactless Delivery, Time to time sanitization and environment-friendly process.

Once the customer places the order and it gets confirmed with the retailer, customer will get the information like body temperature and medical history of the delivery agent and the guy who packed the order, ensuring the safety.

Once the food is delivered to you, your feedback is most valuable to us which will ask u certain questions like if the delivery person was wearing mask and gloves and maintained social distancing.

If one of the above precautions is not followed you can cancel the delivery.

With every order you placed, we will donate one mask and small sanitizer.(optional)

SOFT

Materials and dimensions, 2020

Hollow out and all the materials are suitable for polyester and plastic film to reflect the softness, including the fluffy material on the back of the chair, which can bring people a sense of tenderness.
By exploring the soft fabric of life, this idea is combined with the chair, and the whole fabric is used.
The material used for the deck chair is cotton fabric, and its special use position can provide people with better soft and comfortable effect.
The chair that does not rely on the supporting part is like an upside-down bed. The material is made of cotton and soft plastic, and the surface material of the chair is made by liquid evolution, which has a new definition of softness.
Each individual part is filled with cotton fabric, and the outer wrapping is made of soft leather to increase the retention and softness of the chair shape associated with the petals.
For the chair made of felt-wool material, it gives people a kind of very light and soft feeling visually. Half of its body is translucent state, which increases the tenderness of the whole chair.
Through a simple water cup to associate the chair shape, and for it to give different soft material such as wool fiber, from the vision to give a person a kind of gentle embodiment.
The combination of rope and a kind of soft foam is such a feeling, using a kind of visual binding to show people the most unique side, but also reflects the softness of the material.
The exhibition
The exhibition

I used 3D software to make soft materials, and then injected these materials to make the chairs look soft and comfortable, which is the main purpose of my project. In today’s society, many chairs are composite materials, actually use soft material to make very little chair, so that people cannot be used to provide a good way, customs software rendering that is the most important visual brings the softness and comfort, if these chairs in the future will be made into an object, you must first give a person a kind of shock feeling on the vision. I use of these materials in the polyester, cotton, cotton fabrics, plastic film, etc., all can be provided for the soft material

Statement

I am sure that the theme of chairs is because I have used some very uncomfortable chairs before. When I use them, I always feel that chairs will bring some uncomfortable feelings to my body, especially the hardness of chairs, which greatly reduces people’s softness and comfort, so softness and comfort are very important for chairs. So I did some research from this angle, and found that materials play a very important role in influencing the softness of chairs.

Based on the exploration of materials and dynamics, she is fascinated by the combination of experiment and uncertainty, real and virtual, the 3D form of digital jewellery, which can simulate the real and transcend the real existence. When attached to the digital material, the unexpected effect of watercolour provides surprises for designer and audience. The exhibition also aims to provide the audience with an immersive experience.

” The Gifts for Buddha “

Statement

My jewellery designs take their inspiration from my experience of living in Tibet. I took a cycle journey from Chengdu to Tibet and since then I have had a deep  fascination  of Tibetan culture.

In Tibet jewellery is used more as amulets it is believed that this power comes from the Buddha. My Jewellery designs take inspiration  from this concept of Jewellery being worn as an affirmation of protection I also take ideas from studying traditional Tibetan patterns, symbolic use of colour  and  Buddhist scriptures.

The five symbolic colours are also central to the jewellery. Blue represents the sky, white represents the clouds, green represents the lake, red represents the flame, and yellow represents the land. This is also a symbolic colour representing the origin of Tibet.

“Mother”

“Somebody to Love”

“Childhood memories”

The above animation shows some stories collected through interaction with the audience. These stories show what happens to people because of their “appearance”. By analysing and reorganizing these real stories, I created this work- children’s comic book.

These stories combine the Chinese myth “Nuwa created mankind” with the Western legend “God gives human life”, and use three different types of fairy tales to convey the concept that “everyone is unique and beautiful”.

“Best Life?”

“Unique”

“Someone’s Love”

The audience can stay in the art gallery to watch these comic stories, or they can buy books for children to read.

MA Art and Design

This module mainly introduces and analyzes some excellent works of art, using plastic and other garbage materials. Let people see more reuse solutions.
This part consists of artists’ works. I designed this part of the layout more flexibly, breaking the traditional alignment. Pictures can be dragged and moved, and users can interact with websites in this process.
Circles is one of the most important modules in the website, which contains many tutorials about making handmade art with plastic. I investigated many different design websites, consulted them, produced different tutorial contents, and then pre-filled them in the web page. In this module, I hope I just built a platform to learn and share with each other, and everyone can produce their own content, which can be video, picture or text. Reuse the waste plastics and make them into things that can bring convenience to our lives.
The main function of this module is a map. I investigated and marked the recycling site of plastic waste in Birmingham in advance. Invoking the api interface of Google Maps, people can click the icon and jump to the details page of Google Maps, and then start navigation to the destination. The icon is designed as a smiling face, hoping to encourage people to participate in garbage collection through this design.
In order to make the mobile phone have a better experience in opening web pages, the typesetting has been slightly adjusted, which is more in line with the user’s habits.

An Emo Body, 2020video(02:23)

Statement

An Emo body is a short animation, exploring the relationship between body and emotion under the epidemic situation, and how to find happiness and health. The animation content tells some stories that happened between me and the characters in the small room under the lockdown epidemic  situation. From some personal experiences, I express my story of changing from a negative response to a positive attitude. Use the power of animation to spread the enthusiasm during the Covid-19 crisis.

What if the objects in the room are also physical and emotional?

I created an absurd world, the objects in the room became human beings with bodies and emotions, and they became negative under my influence. In this story, people feel the many possibilities of emotional influence by the environment. This movie is not only my thinking about the relationship between happiness and health, but also a call to others to have an optimistic attitude to recognize and treat emotions.

I use the combination of static collage and installation art to explore and express the influence on people in a high-density and fast-paced metropolis. People have anxiety and alienation in spirit, which express the limitations and weaknesses of human nature caused by social non-commonality, thus exploring the limitations of human nature.

“CAN” Installation art

In addition, between the works and the audience, I not only show the works statically, but also design a series of dynamic interactive forms. The audience can open cans with different patterns, and they will feel relieved and relaxed when they tear open the vacuum packaging. It is like saving and releasing people who are bound by social and work pressure. This interaction and experience can make them understand and feel the works more actively, and establish a kind of ideological blending, psychological dialogue and emotional exchange, including the emotional experience of exhibits.

Statement

My project investigates spatial perception with polka dots and infinitely mirrored space. I am in interested in the space defined as Heterotopia which in my work is somewhere between reality and Utopia. It is unlimited in the scope of space and has no boundaries in the senses. In the first semester of the research on spatial touch, when they touch the space, people’s visual response to the area will activate their memory, experience, and sense of similar space. ‘The door handle is the handshake of the building.’ The project is then the best way to show the ‘handshake’ of the sensory space through animation.
